Description
Make teaching French reading comprehension in your core French or French immersion class so much easier with these differentiated French reading activities! This set includes 10 French texts with differentiated questions so that you can easily offer just the right challenge to your core French, FSL or French immersion students. With these no-prep activities, this is perfect for centers or substitute days, too!
Foster a love of reading in your core French or French immersion class with easy-to-use French reading comprehension worksheets that were created just for beginning readers. Each text includes 3 different levels of questions, so you can easily use the same passage with different ability groups and grade levels. Students will love that these French reading activities are just at their level, meaning that reading is less intimidating and a lot more fun!
Who are these French reading activities good for?
These questions are appropriate for beginning Core French students and French immersion classes who are ready to transition to slightly more challenging grammar and vocabulary. This packet contains more advanced concepts than my reading comprehension sets 1 and 2, however the reading passages are similar in length.
Grade level will vary based on when students began studying French. See the images to determine if the grade level is appropriate for your students. Still not sure? Email me at mmersresources (at) gmail.com.
Use these differentiated French reading comprehension activities for more-advanced beginners with your different proficiency levels.
Each passage includes:
- Short answer English questions and students can answer in English : These questions will be the easiest for true beginners in core French or FSL.
- Short answer French questions : This has the same style of questions as the English, however, the questions are in French and students are directed to answer in French. These are best for your more-advanced learners or French immersion classes.
- Multiple choice questions in French : Occasionally, students will locate specific information in the text (such as adjectives or certain verb tenses). These are great for any level, as the questions are a bit different than the short answer versions.
You can choose all one version for a class, but I like to use different versions based on student levels so that differentiation is super-easy! You can always print 2 versions back-to-back and let students choose their own activity.
Use this set of French reading activities to introduce or reinforce:
- the passé composé
- reflexive verbs in the present and passé composé
- health and wellness
- chores around the house
- the futur simple (basic recognition required for one reading- perfect for the end of French 2!)

This resource includes the following French reading passages:
- Mon anniversaire
- Je suis malade
- Un soir au ciné
- Mamadou aide ses parents
- Un dîner chez Émilie
- Lisette se prépare
- Je me suis fait mal
- Théo est sorti
- On part en vacances
- Un mauvais rendez-vous
- Includes teacher key.
No English passages are included.
These French reading activities are perfect for:
- French reading assessments
- Sub folders
- Individual homework assignments
- Partnered practice activities

Originally reviewed on TPTI love Mme R’s materials… and so do my students. When I am looking for something on TpT she is my first choice because I know I can rely on her resources to be of high quality. She has made my hybrid teaching life bearable.

Originally reviewed on TPTI enjoyed using this resource because some of its themes coincide with the themes that are taught in our curriculum. I have used it as a supplementary resource to not only add some umph to the school board resource but to also give my students an opportunity to read about something that isn’t too long and intimidating. I have also taught my students to use wordreference.com for unfamiliar words and write them above the hilited word which we then discussed the meaning of each sentence. From there, they were able to successfully complete the multiple choice questions. The multiple choice questions are great for those moments when you need a quick assessment on reading comprehension.
With respect to answering the questions in french, some preteaching on what the questions mean and how to respond beforehand would be helpful to your students.
I highly recommend this resource. I have been on the search for something like this for a long time and I am so happy that I found it that I in fact have purchased the whole set.

Originally reviewed on TPTI enjoy these reading comprehension packets because of the fact that there are different questions for differentiated instruction and/or student choice. I use this advancing beginners/intermediate readings for my higher students and we use them to see the passé composé and other structures that we have learned. Again, another great resource.

Originally reviewed on TPTAshley (Mme R) continuously makes fabulous French resources!! Check out her listening comprehension ones too, if you haven’t already! I find these resources hard to come by unless you’re lucky enough to have resources purchased for you at your school or unless you take the time to develop them yourself. Again, Ashley saves me a bunch of time and the resources include high frequency vocabulary and everyday topics! She makes different versions to reach different learners in the class and also provides an answer key. These also make great resources to leave with a substitute teacher. Un gros MERCI, Ashley!!
