Description
Make teaching French reading comprehension in your core French or French immersion class so much easier with these differentiated activities! This set includes 10 French texts with differentiated questions so that you can easily offer just the right challenge to your core French, FSL or French immersion students. With these no-prep activities, this is perfect for centers or substitute days, too!
Foster a love of reading in your core French or French immersion class with easy-to-use French reading comprehension worksheets that were created just for beginning readers. Each text includes 3 different levels of questions, so you can easily use the same passage with different ability groups and grade levels. Students will love that these activities are just at their level, meaning that reading is less intimidating and a lot more fun!
Who are these French reading comprehension activities best for?
These questions are appropriate for beginning core French and FSL students as well as French immersion classes beginning to work on reading comprehension. Check the images to assess the difficulty level and see if it meets your needs.
How are these different from French reading set 1?
The vocabulary used is still appropriate for beginners, but the vocabulary is slightly more challenging. If your students are just starting out with reading activities, you might prefer set 1. In addition to common vocabulary like school supplies, clothing, animals, and sports, you’ll find some 4 season-themed activities.
Use these differentiated French reading for beginners with your different proficiency levels.
Each French reading passage includes:
- Short answer English questions and students can answer in English : These questions will be the easiest for true beginners in core French or FSL.
- Short answer French questions : This has the same style of questions as the English, however, the questions are in French and students are directed to answer in French. These are best for your more-advanced learners or French immersion classes.
- Multiple choice questions in French : Occasionally, students will locate specific information in the text (such as adjectives or certain verb tenses). These are great for any level, as the questions are a bit different than the short answer versions.
You can choose all one version for a class, but I like to use different versions based on student levels so that differentiation is super-easy! You can always print 2 versions back-to-back and let students choose their own activity.
This resource includes the following French reading passages:
- Au marché
- Dans mon sac à dos
- Mes sports préférés
- En hiver
- Au printemps
- En été
- En automne
- Mes animaux domestiques
- Je m’habille
- Le voyage de mes rêves

Includes teacher key. Also includes ideas for extending certain lessons with a bit of culture.
⚠️These French reading comprehension activities are not editable and will not be provided in an editable format. Thank you for understanding.

Originally reviewed on TPTI used these Reading Comprehension paragraphs with my French 2 students after using the lower level ones in French 1, all created by Mme R. They are all good. On the first read through, I had my students listen to my reading and highlight or underline the words they already knew and circled the ones they didn’t know. Then they looked up the words they didn’t know. We covered the questions in French and they answered in French. Then, they kept their papers. On Thursday or Friday, I gave the multiple choice questions on a Google Quiz and they were allowed to use their paper to answer the questions. After the quiz, they turned in their marked copy for credit. We saw their comprehension grow. They were pretty excited that they were able to understand most of the paragraphs without help as the semester progressed. These were well made, and had a few versions of the questions-in English and in French.
