Mardi Gras is almost here! It’s such a fun time to be a French teacher, because students always love learning about Mardi Gras traditions! From making Mardi Gras masks to learning new vocabulary and discovering traditions, I’ve never had a class that didn’t love it! These Mardi Gras activities for French are a fun way to lead your students to discover the holiday in a fun and engaging way.
I’ve recently released a new set of Mardi Gras worksheets, speaking activities, and a culture game that is perfect for teaching some customs and French vocabulary. What’s even better? It incorporates French grammar practice, too, so you can reinforce what you’re already doing!
Here are a few of my favorite Mardi Gras activities:
French color by code
Color by code activities are a fun way to review the grammar and vocabulary your students are already working in while having a little Mardi Gras fun! This includes 4 different Mardi Gras activities for French of varying difficulty, so even the newest beginners and your more-advanced French classes can benefit!
Even if you teach older students, this is a ton of fun! I’ve never had a group of high schoolers who didn’t still enjoy coloring, but a lot of times we don’t offer these types of activities when they’re older! Try it out after a quiz or test and see how much they’ll love it!
French speaking activities
What’s the point of learning new French vocabulary if students don’t ever practice speaking? Along with the Mardi Gras vocabulary worksheets, there are Mardi Gras activities for speaking that you can do with different ability levels. This pack of Mardi Gras activities for French includes a Find Someone Who survey and a partner interview as well as this partner activity that is perfect for beginners!
When students are a little wound up or just need a change of pace, speaking activities are the perfect way to practice their new vocabulary in a meaningful way. The movement of an activity like Find Someone Who is great for long class periods or days, but I use these regularly even in 45 minute classes!
Mardi Gras board game
This is a really fun way for students to learn about Mardi Gras culture with their classmates. Students use the provided culture pages to discover fun facts about Mardi Gras and Carnaval. After reading about the holiday, they quiz each other using the game cards. It’s a fun way for them to learn together in a collaborative way that will engage even your most hesitant learners.
The game and reading are in English so you can use this with any level of French or as a fun Mardi Gras activity for your French club.
French grammar and vocabulary worksheets
I love seasonal resources, but it’s not always easy to find the time when there are so many other things that students need to learn! Because of that, my French holiday worksheets include review pages for French grammar, verbs, and vocabulary that students are already working on. It’s really easy to bring in seasonal fun while still reinforcing those important concepts!
This pack includes verb practice for ER verbs, le passé composé, le futur simple, and even has a phrases mêlées activity that is perfect for practicing sentence structure. It’s a great way to review for an upcoming test or quiz while bringing in some fun for the season.
All of these activities are part of my Mardi Gras activities pack, along with a lot of other fun and engaging no-prep activities! You can learn more about this at my Teachers Pay Teachers store.
