Foster a love of reading in your French class with easy-to-use French reading comprehension worksheets that were created just for beginning readers. Each text includes 3 different levels of questions, so you can easily use the same passage with different ability groups and grade levels. Students will love that these activities are just at their level, meaning that reading in French is less intimidating and a lot more fun!
Who are these French reading comprehension activities best for?
These questions are appropriate for beginning Core French students and French immersion classes beginning to work on reading comprehension. Grade level will vary based on when students began studying French.

It’s so easy to use these differentiated French reading comprehension activities with your different proficiency levels!
Each French reading passage includes:
- Short answer English questions and students can answer in English : These questions will be the easiest for core French beginners.
- Short answer French questions : This has the same style of questions as the English, however, the questions are in French and students are directed to answer in French. These are best for your more-advanced learners or immersion classes.
- Multiple choice questions in French : Occasionally, students will locate specific information in the text. These are great for any level, as the questions are a bit different than the short answer versions.
You can choose all one version for a class, but I like to use different versions based on student levels so that differentiation is super-easy! You can always print 2 versions back-to-back and let students choose their own activity.
Teach core French and French immersion? No problem! You can use the same text and differentiate the questions!
This resource includes the following French reading passages:
- Un jour à la ferme
- Après l’école – sports themed reading
- Dans ma valise – travel and clothing themed
- Un jour à la plage
- À la boulangerie
- J’ai faim ! – After school snack themed
- Ma petite sœur
- Mon meilleur ami
- Le match de foot
- Un jour en ville
These passages and French reading comprehension activities focus on the present tense. Students will see a mix of common regular and irregular verbs. There are a few instances where they will see verbs of other tenses, but the use is simple enough for beginners.

This resource worked well in my Grade 7 and 8 Core French classroom. The reading comprehension texts were engaging, age appropriate, and interesting enough to keep students focused. I appreciated that the topics felt accessible for learners while still giving them a chance to build vocabulary, reading stamina, and confidence in French.
The comprehension questions were also well done. They checked student understanding clearly and gave students a good chance to go back into the text and find evidence for their answers. I found the balance strong, because the questions were supportive without being too simple. This made the resource useful for both whole class work and more independent practice.
I also liked that the texts gave students meaningful reading practice without overwhelming them. For Core French, it can be hard to find materials that feel manageable and still suit older students, and this resource did that well. It fit nicely with my Grade 7 and 8 learners and led to good class discussion. I would recommend it to other Core French teachers looking for engaging reading comprehension activities with solid follow-up questions Thank you!
