When February rolls around, it’s so much fun to celebrate with la Chandeleur activities in French class or after school in a French club! Not only do students LOVE to eat, but it’s the perfect time to teach some French culture, practice a little reading comprehension, and learn some new vocabulary students won’t see in their French books!
Whether you’re using these activities for la Chandeleur with your core French class, with French immersion students, or after school in a French club or world language club, your students will love learning about the French traditions surrounding la Chandeleur! These easy-to-use la Chandeleur activities make it so easy for them to practice new vocabulary that will require little to no prep from you. They’re a nice break from the everyday French vocab and grammar you’re doing, and they’re a great way to help students learn some French culture.
Start with the French reading for cultural understanding.
Most students will probably not be familiar with la Chandeleur, so it’s important to make sure they know the reasons behind the celebration. With these texts in French and English, you can teach about French culture even if your students aren’t reading much in French yet.
La Chandeleur activities for vocabulary
After students have learned about la Chandeleur, these vocabulary activities are perfect even for French beginners. With fun puzzles, no-prep vocabulary activities, and easy-to-use worksheets, getting everything ready to go is so easy!
You can leave these ready-to-go sheets with a sub or use them for in-class activities or homework. With the variety of activities included, you’ll even get enough fun activities to have something on-hand for fast finishers!
French speaking activities for la Chandeleur
While doing worksheets is great for memorizing vocabulary and practicing writing, it’s really important for students to have a chance to use the words in conversations, too. These la Chandeleur activities are designed so even beginners can speak with confidence as they use the new vocabulary in meaningful ways. Just partner them up and you’ll get them speaking in no time!
Post these word wall cards for a handy visual aid.
I love using word walls as a way to have the words right there and accessible for students to use. These are the perfect addition to your French food unit, but they’re also a great way to expose students to words they’ll learn later or review what they’ve already seen!
Get ready to make crêpes!
If you have time and your school allows it, it’s a lot of fun to make crepes in class! I bought a small hot plate and a crepe pan so we could make them in my classroom! Most of the time, I make the batter at home and bring a container for each class so that I have time to make a crepe for everyone. You can have students make them at home and take pictures for a fun way to include families in this.
When I’ve had the chance, I’ve also been able to swap classrooms with our cooking teacher a few times, and we made them in small groups from start to finish. It’s the perfect way to wrap up la Chandeleur activities, and it’s such a fun way to apply what they’re learning! Hopefully, some of them will keep making them in the future!
