Effective Activities for French Irregular Verbs

French irregular verbs
French irregular verbs giving your Core French or immersion students trouble? You’re not alone! Whether they are spelling them wrong or using the wrong one (je suis quatorze) even the most common verbs give French students trouble. I love teaching French verbs, and I really love making activities for students to practice them!

A lot of teachers use my grammar and vocabulary packets for teaching vocabulary and verbs, but sometimes you just need a good, solid set of activities to teach a French verb conjugation, right?

A much-requested bundle for French irregular verbs is here!

I get a lot of requests for resources. While I can’t make every request happen, I do try to create resources that will be the most helpful for you!

I get frequent requests for more French verb conjugation activities, so I made a bundle of no-prep worksheets for teaching or reviewing five common French irregular verbs in the present tense : avoir, être, faire, aller, and venir.

All pages come with an English version for beginners or a full-French version for immersion or a class who understands French directions well but could use a review of the basics, making this a really versatile way to practice French irregular verbs!

French irregular verbs

These packets will help you teach:

  • French irregular verbs avoir, être, faire, aller, and venir in the present tense

  • writing negative sentences

  • answering questions

  • hair/eye color descriptions with avoir

  • common expressions with être and faire – vocabulary lists included

  • the futur proche

  • the passé récent

  • prepositions à and de with contractions (in venir packet)

How are they set up?

The activities progress in difficulty of activities from matching and multiple choice to sentence writing and answering questions. Because all the French irregular verbs worksheets follow the same structure, they are perfect to use together, but they can be used as stand-alone resources anytime. Used all together, they become a familiar way for students to practice French irregular verbs.

What about a digital version?

These PDFs now have an interactive layer via the EASEL activity at TpT. This means you can assign them to your students online. I’ve removed answer keys and added text boxes so students can type right on this document.

Students will access this version via Google Classroom OR a Google email account. Hopefully in the future, TpT will make this possible for classes who don’t use Google, but I’m not sure exactly if/when this will happen.

This is a great resource, thank you!”
