Teaching French question words

Teaching French words is such an important part of any beginning French course, but a lot of beginners find it really complicated at first. With the right materials, teaching French question words can be fun, and it doesn’t have to feel so difficult! Here is how I recommend teaching the French question words.

1. Present the question words with corresponding notes.

My PowerPoint presentation for questions includes step by step directions for using question words, forming questions with est-ce que, and using inversion. Practice slides with animated answers will appear as you click, so you can practice and check the answers in class. The PowerPoint includes printable student notes pages so you can print slides only or slides with notes pages.

2. Provide student-friendly notes and activities.

My grammar and vocabulary packets include easy to understand notes, engaging activities, and effective practice so students really master the concepts the first time around. Because this bundle is intended for beginning French students, the notes  are in English. This really helps students solidify their understanding of the grammar.

Here are a few student notes and activity pages from my French Questions words speaking and writing packet.

The packet contains student-friendly notes, worksheets, partner activities, puzzles, and more. Here’s a peek at one of the partner activities the packet.

3. Reinforce with visuals.

Students will retain the information so much better when they have visuals to help them. These question word posters match the style of the PowerPoint presentation, and they look great in the classroom.

4. Incorporate technology so students can have fun while practicing.

Boom Cards™ are a fun way to incorporate technology into the classroom! These digital task cards are paperless, making them just right for the 1:1 classroom or any class who is looking to add more technology. They check themselves, they work on modern devices with internet access, and they are so fun!

These question word task cards available at Boom Learning℠ are a fun way to mix it up and bring in some technology!

These resources will help you teach est-ce que and inversion, question formation, question words, and answering questions. Each resource is available individually, but I’ve also bundled them up at Teachers Pay Teachers and disounted the bundle 15 %. I like to make surprise additions to my bundles, and anytime I do, those additions are free to anyone who has already purchased the bundle. So, if I create anything fun that would go great with this bundle, I’ll add it in and those who have purchased the bundle get it for no additional cost!

What do teachers have to say about these resources?

Marlee K. says, “My students love the puzzles included in this resource.”

Laura S. says, “Great resource for beginners! I like how it was inclusive and had -er verb explanations!”

Breanna J. says, “I love each resource I have purchased from you. They are thorough, complete, and help me save so much time. Merci bien!”

Scott M. says, “Well done as always!”
